Shigeo Uchida, a native of Japan, received BSChE and MSChE degrees from Shizuoka University in 1964 and 1967, respectively, and received his PhD (ChE) in 1973 from West Virginia University. He joined Shizuoka University in 1973 as an assistant professor and was promoted to professor in 1983. After serving as department chairman for several years, he became dean of the College of Engineering in 1993 and served out his term in 1995. He was then selected dean of Student Affairs (Vice President) of Shizuoka University in 1996 and held that post until 1998. Presently, he is the vice-dean of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering and has held that post since 1998.

Uchida is an authority on gas absorption with chemical reaction, especially absorption into slurries. He is the author of six books and more than 60 journal articles. Among them, the articles on the model for three-phase gas absorption have been cited in many related books and journals.

He has been appointed as a member of more than 30 academic and professional committees and societies including the Scientific Council of Ministry of Education, Government of Japan and The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan.

Professor Uchida is married to Katsuyo Uchida and they have two children, Yoko and Tetsuya.
