Sharon Long was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Nelson and Linda Simmons. She graduated with a BS in chemical engineering in 1984 with memberships in Tau Beta Pi, Omega Chi Epsilon and AIChE.
Following graduation, Long began her career with the DuPont Company at Washington Works in Parkersburg. She held a variety of manufacturing and business positions with increasing managerial responsibility within the DuPont polymers division in Parkersburg and Wilmington, Delaware. Positions included manager, polymers technical services laboratory at Chestnut Run, customer service manager, Kalrez at Tralee Park and manufacturing superintendent, Kalrez at Tralee Park.
In 1996, the DuPont Elastomers business became part of the DuPont Dow Elastomers joint venture where Long became the global process manager, order to cash, for the implementation of SAP. After 15 years with DuPont and its subsidiaries, she took the opportunity to return to Pittsburgh and worked as an independent consultant assisting companies with their SAP start-ups until 2003 when she joined AMI Doduco as a manufacturing manager.
In 2006, Long joined Sycor Americas as a business management consultant and progressed to vice president of operations. She used her business, process and IT knowledge to assist companies such as Bayer Material Science, Westinghouse, Timken and smaller local companies, Converteam, Ardex, Simona and LiteCure, streamline their business processes and implement SAP and Microsoft Dynamics AX.
In early 2011, she joined Tube City IMS as the director, global project management office. The fantastic opportunity to join a business with significant growth in the steel industry was too hard to pass up. She is developing and implementing the processes and structure for the project management office, managing a global business process improvement program and managing the implementation of Microsoft Dynamics AX.
Long is an advisory board member of the Pittsburgh Technology Council’s PghTech Women Network™ with a goal of increasing the participation of women in STEM. She is the coach of an all-girls FIRST® Lego® League team that won awards at the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, competition its first three years. She also assisted in the creation of a FIRST® all-girls team at Carnegie Mellon University that will participate in their second World competition.
Long and her husband, Doug (BSME 1983), have three sons, Randall, Steve and Eric, and currently reside in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
