Peter L. Perrotta was born in Chicago, IL when his father Anthony J. was a PhD student in crystallography at the University of Chicago. He grew up in Monroeville, PA where his mother Alberta L. was a public school teacher at Gateway High School and then attended WVU on a tennis scholarship, graduating with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1984.
He obtained his MD from Pennsylvania State University in Hershey, PA in 1989 and during that time married Cheryl L. Denlinger who was a PhD student in pharmacology working under Dr. Elliot Vesell. Pete then served on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Diving and Undersea Medical Officer for 5 years, most in Groton, CT, before completing training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Yale University in New Haven, CT in 1998. He is also board-certified in Transfusion Medicine and Clinical Informatics.
Pete spent 7 years as faculty in the Department of Pathology at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, NY before returning to WVU in 2005 as a specialist in Laboratory Medicine. He rose to the rank of Professor and became Chair of the Department of Pathology, Anatomy and Laboratory Medicine at the Health Sciences Center in 2018. He is also the Director of Pathology Services for the WVU Health System.
He and his wife reside in Morgantown, West Virginia. They have one son, Matthew J., who works in the tech/gaming industry and lives in Cary, NC with his wife Ashley (Gutta).
