Liang Shih Fan, a native of Taiwan, received his BS (ChE) from National Taiwan University (1970), MS (ChE 1973) and PhD (ChE 1975) from West Virginia University and a MS (statistics) from Kansas State University (1978). He joined Ohio State University in 1978 as an assistant professor and became department chairman in 1992. In 1996 he was permanently designated distinguished university professor, the highest honor that the university confers on a faculty member.

Fan is a leading authority in fluidization and particle technology. He is a consultant to 20 major corporations, U.S. editor of Powder Technology and a consulting editor of the AIChE Journal. He is an author/coauthor of four books, nine book chapters, 200 journal articles and seven symposium volumes. He has received more than 30 awards and honors from universities and professional societies worldwide in recognition of his research including AIChE's Alpha Chi Sigma Award for Chemical Engineering Research.

Fan is married to Shu Huan Weng. They have two children, Jonathan and Joline.
