John Lloyd Gainer was born in Grafton, attended schools in Preston County and graduated from West Virginia University with a BSChE in 1960. He subsequently received an MS degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD degree from the University of Delaware. After working for Union Carbide Corporation, he accepted a position on the faculty at the University of Virginia, where he is currently professor of chemical engineering.
Gainer has received several teaching awards, including the University of Virginia Alumni Association's Distinguished Professor Award and the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Southeastern Section of the ASEE. He has also received the MacWade Award for outstanding contributions to Virginia's engineering school. His research concerns the application of chemical engineering principles to increase oxygen utilization during trauma and disease. In addition, Gainer is active in the Center for Bioprocessing at the University of Virginia, which was established by the state to aid the development of the biotechnology industry in Virginia.
