George Keller was born, grew up and went to public schools in Charleston. He received a BSChE from Virginia Tech and an MSChE and a PhDChE from Penn State. He joined Union Carbide Corporation in 1961 at the South Charleston Technical Center, and remained there in the research and development department until he retired in 1997. During that time, he rose to the highest position on the technical ladder - senior corporate research fellow - and was also the manager of the separations and process fundamentals skill center. After retiring, he co-founded NewCarbon, LLC, with the purpose of commercializing various aspects of the WVU chemical engineering department’s coal-to-advanced-carbon-products programs.

Keller has received three national awards from the AIChE, plus the Chemical Pioneer Award from the American Institute of Chemists. He is a Fellow of the AIChE. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1988.

He has been a long-time member of the visiting committee of WVU’s Department of Chemical Engineering and has served as its chair. He also serves as an adjunct professor for the Department. He is presently the chair of the Visiting Committee of the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.
