E. Ronald McHenry was born in Hastings, and is a 1956 chemical engineering graduate of West Virginia University. He is a worldwide consultant on carbon and raw materials technology. Previously he was director of technology at Koppers Industries and Senior Manager of Worldwide Industrial Carbon and Graphite Raw Materials at Union Carbide Corporation. His 32 years of research, development and production experience at Union Carbide included raw materials and carbon and graphite products for fiber, electrode, aerospace and nuclear applications. He joined Koppers in 1989.

McHenry was chairman of the U.S. delegation to the International Organization for Standardization on carbonaceous materials for the aluminum industry for 16 years. He also chaired related ASTM committees on carbon testing, industrial pitches and petroleum coke. Memberships include the Chemical Engineering Advisory Committee and Alumni Association at WVU, ASTM, AIME, AIChE, ACS and ASQC. He has authored more than 40 technical papers. His patents include precursors for carbon fibers.

McHenry and his wife, Bernice, have two daughters, Deanna and Karen, and grandsons. He is a resident of Berea, Ohio, and Leesburg, Florida. His hobbies include cycling, painting and gardening.
