Jack Fitzgerald was born in Montgomery, on February 5, 1931. He received his BSChE and BS (engineering electives) degrees from West Virginia University in 1954 and an MSChE degree in 1957. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Lambda Upsilon.

After two years as an instructor at the U.S. Army Engineer School, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, he began a 28-year career with various affiliates of Exxon Corporation when he joined Esso Research and Development Laboratories, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as a chemical engineer. He subsequently transferred to assignments in the field of logistics optimization in New York and Coral Gables, Florida, before transferring to Esso Puerto Rico as marketing operations manager. He returned to a variety of logistics assignments in Coral Gables in 1973 and was named planning manager of Exxon Services Venezuela in Caracas in 1979. In 1981 he returned to Coral Gables as head of supply coordination and planning for Exxon's refinery in Aruba. Following his retirement in 1985, he has worked part time as a consultant.

Fitzgerald and his wife, Margaret (WVU 1953), are the parents of two sons and a daughter.
