Robert Pyle, born July 25, 1927, was reared near Middlebourne, and is a graduate of Tyler High School. He is an alumnus of West Virginia University, earning his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering in 1950, 1951 and 1953, respectfully. An honorary Doctor of Science degree was conferred by WVU in 1980.

He joined Union Carbide Corporation in 1952 at the corporation's chemical facilities in South Charleston. He moved to corporate headquarters in New York in 1960, where he served in various line and staff capacities over the years both at divisional and corporate levels.

Pyle was appointed a division president in 1977 and was elected a corporate vice president in 1979. After 34 years of service with Union Carbide, Pyle retired in 1986.

He is a member of AIChE, the Society of Sigma Xi, and a former member of the board of directors of the WVU Foundation.

Pyle and his wife, Patricia, reside in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
