  • Ph.D. Chemical Engineering, Iowa State, 1964

Richard C. Bailie graduated with a BS degree in chemical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1951, an MS degree in chemical engineering in 1956 from Wayne State University and his PhD from Iowa State University in 1964.

Upon graduation in 1951, Bailie joined Victor Chemical Works, which operated a semi-works plant where he worked as plant trouble-shooter and participated in the plant start-up. In 1953, he was drafted into the service where he was assigned to the Plans and Evaluation Office of the Army Chemical Center. After leaving the Army, Bailie was appointed an instructor of chemical engineer- ing at Wayne State University, an appointment he held until 1957. In 1957, he studied at the International School of Nuclear Science and Engineering. He became proficient in the area of nuclear engineering, at which time he joined the faculty of Kansas State University as an assistant professor of nuclear engineering. Bailie went on to establish Kansas State’s first accredited BS in nuclear engineering.

In 1965 Bailie joined the chemical engineering faculty at West Virginia University. While at WVU, he championed the introduction of design activities throughout the undergraduate program. He enhanced students’ skills developed working in teams, oral and written presentations and computer simulation. All these activities led to improved performance by undergraduates in the traditional capstone course. He is the co-author of two textbooks and several articles on design integration. Bailie retired from WVU in 1993.

Bailie and his wife, Judith, reside in New Bern, North Carolina.
