Jim Laughlin is a partner in the international law firm of Holland & Knight LLP and is a resident in its Washington, D.C., office. He focuses his practice on litigation and counseling and represents chemical, pharmaceutical, and electronic clients in intellectual property and related technology issues.

Laughlin received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from West Virginia University and his law degree from the Washington College of Law of the American University. His professional career began with the legal division of the American Cyanamid Company in Stamford, Connecticut. After seven years, he joined the office of general counsel of Xerox. Twelve years after receiving his bachelor’s degree, he entered the private practice of law in Washington, D.C.

Among a few of his more interesting cases, Laughlin has litigated issues relating to plasma displays for Owens-Illinois, ethylidiene diacetate for Monsanto, cubic boron nitride for DeBeers, methyl-tertiary-butyl ether for Texaco, gallium arsenide for Hughes and ethernet chips for 3Com.

Laughlin is a Fellow of the American Intellectual Property Bar and has been listed in Who’s Who in America and the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. He holds the highest rating for legal skills and ethics, an “AV” rating as established by Martindale-Hubbell.
