Basil Snider, Jr. was elected vice president of Media General, Inc. and vice chairman and CEO of Garden State Paper Company in July 1989. He is responsible for Media General's newsprint holdings in New Jersey, Georgia and Mexico.

Snider previously was president and chief executive officer of Garden State Paper Company, Inc. since January 1978. He joined the company in 1977 as executive vice president.

Media General, parent of Garden State Paper since it was acquired in 1970, is a diversified communications company with newspaper, broadcast, cable, printing and publishing operations. The company's newsprint subsidiaries produce through a 100 percent recycling process about 1/10th of all newsprint made in the United States and have licensees in Mexico, Japan and India.

Before joining Garden State Paper, Snider was vice president, manufacturing for the Sodyeco Division of Martin Marietta Corporation. He was with American Cyanamid Company from 1950 to 1974, where he held various management positions, including vice president of manufacturing for its subsidiary, the Formica Corporation.

Snider holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from West Virginia University. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Management Association and the Paper Industry Management Association.

He is a former chairman of the Paper Recycling Committee of the American Paper Institute's Paperboard Group. He is also a member of the Board of the American Paper Institute and the Executive Committee of the Paperboard Group.

Snider is a former director of the United States Business and Industrial Council and also served on the board of its Educational Foundation. He is a former director of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Virginia Beautiful.

Snider also serves as chairman of the newly formed Garden State Paper Technologies Group. On February 28, 1993, he retired, but a consulting agreement with Media General continues his oversight of their newsprint business and maintains the vice presidency of Media General as well as vice chairman of the Board of Garden State Paper Co.

Snider and his wife, Betty, live in Midlothian, Virginia.
